Our Story
The Breed
The Charolais breed of cattle arrived in North America from the Normandy area of France via Mexico during the French period of government, approximately 1862-1867. Charolais can be found in the grasslands of Argentina up to the Dakotas in the United States.
The breed possesses excellent conversion of quality feed to meat and with the right mixture of soils and pasture yields exceptional protein with high nutritional value fat.
The Land
Hondo Valley New Mexico river bottom lands are exceptional for supporting high protein value grasses and a diversity of plant life - apple, pear and fruit tree cultivation began in the early 19th century by the Spanish and continue to this day by small family landholders.
The soil organic and mineral content provide grasses and trees with the nutrients to deliver excellent native forage supporting diverse and highly productive cattle breeding and growing operations.
Animal Welfare
Our animal welfare standards are unorthodox for typical North American cattle breeding and growing operations as we do not physically alter our cattle by castration or dehorning.
Additionally, we allow heifers to determine when to wean calves, and only segregate mature bulls for harvest when necessary for supplying our customers. As a result, calves, heifers and mature bulls form voluntary social groups promoting self-regulating internal stability and protection of the herd.
We believe this approach is consistent with production of the highest quality grass fed beef and exemplary animal welfare standards.
